First-half explosion lifts Shenandoah past Rutgers-Camden women

CAMDEN, N.J. (Sept. 8, 2019) – The Shenandoah University women's soccer team scored three goals in the opening half and went on to defeat Rutgers University-Camden, 4-1, in a non-conference game here Sunday.

The Hornets improve to 3-2, while the Scarlet Raptors fall to 0-3.

Freshman forward Sara Sonnak got the Hornets rolling with her second collegiate goal, lofting a long shot from the left side that sailed over Raptor sophomore keeper Natalie Eberhardt and into the right side of the net. Sonnak's goal came 7:03 into the game.

Shenandoah doubled its lead in the 41st minute when freshman midfielder Brittany Bessette scored her first collegiate goal. Freshman midfielder Kristen Fisher sent a cross from the left side to Bessette at the top of the box and she hit a high shot over Eberhardt to score at 40:21.

The Hornets added a back-breaker only 44 seconds before halftime. Fisher again crossed from the left side and it was finished by a header from sophomore forward Maiya Pencile at 44:16. It was Pencile's team-leading fourth goal of the season.

Rutgers-Camden pulled one goal back in the 58th minute when senior midfielder Sarah Zuzulock bend in a shot from the left side of the net for her first goal of the season. Shenandoah, however, notched the final goal at 84:25 when Pencile assisted on a tally by sophomore back Taylor Morris.

Rutgers-Camden held a 16-15 edge in shots and a 6-0 margin in corner kicks, but the Raptors had only six shots on goal, as opposed to 10 by the Hornets. Eberhardt made six saves and Shenandoah sophomore keeper Anna Jacobson had five.
