WAYNE, N.J. (Oct. 2, 2021) – Right after the Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team watched a two-goal lead disappear, the Scarlet Raptors countered with a knockout punch of their own here Saturday.
Sophomore defender
Quincy Attobrah scored off a throw-in from senior forward
Khari Shepherd less than one minute after William Paterson University tied the game, lifting the Scarlet Raptors to a 3-2 victory in a New Jersey Athletic Conference contest.
The victory was the Scarlet Raptors' first in conference play, lifting their record to 1-3 in the NJAC and 5-4-2 overall. William Paterson falls to 3-7-1 overall and 0-4 in the conference.
Senior midfielder
Liam Craver got the Scarlet Raptors on the board with an unassisted tally only 5:29 into the game for his first goal of the year. That lead held through halftime and shortly after the second half started, the Raptors doubled their lead on an own goal in the 51st minute.
Freshman forward Diego Navas Trujillo got the Pioneers right back into the game in the 67th minute, scoring off an assist from senior forward Jacob Von Giebel. Eleven minutes later, Navas Trujillo knotted the score at 2-2 with an unassisted tally for his fourth goal of the year.
Paterson barely had time to celebrate before Shepherd fed Attobrah for the winning goal. Shepherd's long throw-in fell to Attobrah in front of the net and the Raptors' back buried a shot in the bottom right corner at 78:08. It was his third goal of the season and second game-winning tally. It also was the team-leading sixth assist for Shepherd.
Both teams finished with 17 shots and four corner kicks. Rutgers-Camden sophomore goalie
Connor Smith made nine saves, while junior keeper Sean Furtek had three saves for the Pioneers.
Rutgers-Camden returns to play Wednesday with a 4 p.m. non-conference game at Haverford College.
