JERSEY CITY, N.J. (Dec. 4, 2021) – Due to COVID protocols, the New Jersey City University women's basketball team hadn't played a game since November 11.
The Gothic Knights made up for lost time against Rutgers University-Camden in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Saturday.
NJCU jumped to a 26-8 lead after one quarter and went on to defeat the Scarlet Raptors, 70-39. The win stretched the Gothic Knights' winning streak over Rutgers-Camden to four games and cut the Raptors' lead in the all-time series to 39-28.
Rutgers-Camden fell to 0-7 overall and 0-3 in the conference. Due to the fact that NJCU had to forfeit a pair of NJAC games during its protocol – games that don't count on NCAA records but do count in the NJAC standings – the Gothic Knights own the odd record of 2-0 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
Freshman forward Liyah Allen and sophomore guard Damaris Rodriguez collected 18 points and nine rebounds apiece for the Gothic Knights, with Rodriguez adding nine assists. Freshman guard Taija'Ney McCollum added 11 points, while junior guard Laney Fox notched five points, nine rebounds and five assists.
Rutgers-Camden received 15 points and nine rebounds from freshman guard
Rahzirah Blocker. Senior guard/forward
Tiazha Jackson added six points, while sophomore forward
Carleigh Galasso had a game-high 10 rebounds and added one blocked shot.
Rutgers-Camden shot only 13-for-74 (17.6 percent) from the floor, including 1-for-19 (5.3) from three-point range. NJCU shot 27-for-60 (45.0) and 4-for-16 (25.0), respectively.
The Gothic Knights held a 53-46 edge off the boards and also made two more turnovers (21-19) than the Scarlet Raptors.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Wednesday with a 6 p.m. NJAC home game against Rowan University.
