MONTCLAIR, N.J. (April 1, 2021) – The difference between the Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team and the clubs at the top of the New Jersey Athletic Conference standings has been so small during this strange pandemic-altered spring season.
That was the case again here Thursday as the Scarlet Raptors were defeated by NJAC-leading Montclair State University, 2-0.
Early in the game, a foul in the box allowed Montclair State to take a penalty kick. Sophomore forward Janbi Kaghado converted the shot for his second goal of the year, and what proved to be his second game-winning goal. That tally was all anyone could manage until sophomore midfielder Justin Goldberg tacked on a goal with only 4:36 remaining.
The loss dropped the Scarlet Raptors to 1-3-1 overall and in the conference as they completed the regular-season part of their schedule and await the upcoming NJAC playoffs. Montclair State, which improves to 3-0 overall and in the conference, will host Ramapo College (2-0-1) Saturday morning in the final NJAC regular-season game. The winner will earn the top playoff seed.
Rutgers-Camden had a 1-1 tie against Ramapo and dropped one-goal decisions against both Stockton University (1-0) and William Paterson University (3-2).
Montclair State held a 15-11 edge in shots, including a 7-4 margin in shots on goal. Both teams had three corner kicks. Scarlet Raptor sophomore goalie
Juan Bahena made five saves, while Red Hawk junior keeper Shane Keenan had four.
