Less than five minutes later, Crowley had her first collegiate goal, which proved to be the game winner as the Scarlet Raptors defeated Elizabethtown College, 1-0, in the season opener for both teams. The game was played one day later than its scheduled start due to the downpours from Hurricane Ida's remains on Wednesday.
The victory marked the second straight season-opening shutout for the Scarlet Raptors, who blanked Ramapo College, 3-0, during the pandemic-altered season in the spring semester. The win also marked the program's first victory ever against Elizabethtown in five tries. The Blue Jays had defeated the Scarlet Raptors in 2009 and for three straight years from 2017-2019.
Crowley scored the game's lone goal at 20:36, gathering a loose ball in the box and firing a high shot from the left side over Blue Jay goalie Adrienne McGallicher.
Rutgers-Camden put its deep and talented roster on display, playing 23 student-athletes and holding a traditionally-strong Elizabethtown team to only two shots, including one on goal that was blocked in the back. The Raptors held an 8-2 margin in shots and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
The combination of sophomore goalies
Chloe Beasley and
Kayla McKeever split time in the Raptor net, with both playing a shutout half. Although neither one picked up a save, both did a fine job controlling the box, smothering crosses and breaking up any potential threats. McGallicher, meanwhile, had four saves for Elizabethtown.
The Scarlet Raptors return to action on Saturday when they face Adrian College at 2 p.m. in a game held at Rowan University.
