GLENSIDE, Pa (Sept. 1, 2022) – One year ago, the Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team opened its season with a home victory over Arcadia University, 3-0.
The Knights turned the table here Thursday on their own pitch, posting a 2-0 victory in the season opener for both teams.
The loss was the first opening-day defeat for the Scarlet Raptors since another 2-0 game against Lycoming College in 2017. The Raptors had gone 3-0-1 since then in openers and are now 10-5-2 on 17 opening days under Head Coach
Tim Oswald.
Arcadia scored early, on the very first shot of the season for either team, as junior midfielder Cole Gordon headed home a corner kick from sophomore back Aidan McGrath at 7:52. Gordon's header, to the lower middle section of the goal, was his first career goal for the Knights.
Rutgers-Camden, which featured four new players in its starting lineup, had only one shot in the opening half, while Arcadia had two. The Raptors' shot was high off the foot of freshman
Tommy Monaghan.
Arcadia tacked on an insurance goal at 80:58 on a tally by sophomore Steven Warren.
The Knights held an 8-7 edge in shots overall. Both teams had four corner kicks.
Arcadia goalie Jake Varrato needed to make only one save, on a shot by sophomore
Pedro Jovel-Castro, to earn the shutout. Jovel-Castro led the Scarlet Raptors with two shots.
Raptor sophomore keeper
Sean Boen made three saves and allowed two goals.
The Scarlet Raptors play a pair of road games over the Labor Day weekend with a 3 p.m. game at Swarthmore College Sunday and a 4 p.m. contest at Widener University Monday.
