CAMDEN, N.J. (Sept. 14, 2022) – On a night when the Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team could have had a comfortable early lead, the Scarlet Raptors instead were fortunate to get one goal. And the early wasted opportunities came back to haunt the Raptors as Cabrini scored with 3:28 remaining in the game to capture a 2-1 decision in a non-conference game.
The victory lifts the Cavaliers to 2-2-2, while the Scarlet Raptors fall to 2-3-1.
The Scarlet Raptors had several early offensive pushes and got a goal gifted in the 11th minute when a backpass eluded Cabrini goalie MJ Graham for an own goal. One minute later, sophomore
George Louis-Ferdinand headed a shot off the crossbar, nearly giving Rutgers-Camden a 2-0 lead.
Cabrini knotted the score with 27 minutes gone in the game on a long shot to the lower left side of the net by junior midfielder Nolan Holloway.
Both teams had four shots and one corner kick in the opening half, with neither Graham or Raptor sophomore keeper
Sean Boen making a save.
Both teams had some opportunities to break the deadlock in the second half, including a header by Raptor midfielder
Daniel Tittelmayer in the 73rd minute that was saved by Graham for his lone save of the night.
With Cabrini applying pressure late in the game, a scramble in the box produced the winning goal. Junior Nick LoBiondo scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season from near the goal line, assisted by freshman Brian Sharkey.
Cabrini finished with a 10-8 lead in shots and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks, including three in the waning minutes of the game.
Boen finished with three saves, all in the second half.
The Scarlet Raptors return to action Saturday with a 1 p.m. home game against Wilkes University.
