CAMDEN, N.J. (Sept. 7, 2022) – The Alvernia University women's soccer team scored the tying goal in the 82nd minute as Rutgers University-Camden settled for a 2-2 tie with the Golden Wolves in a non-conference game here Wednesday night.
The Scarlet Raptors, who appeared to be on the verge of their first victory of the season, stand at 0-1-1, while the Golden Wolves are 0-1-2.
Rutgers-Camden out-shot the visitors, 17-8, and had several threats as it bounced back with a strong effort after a season-opening loss against Lynchburg Saturday. Both teams had two corner kicks, while Raptor junior goalie
Kayla McKeever made four saves and Alvernia freshman keeper Brynn Bock had eight.
The Scarlet Raptors jumped on the board with only 6:10 gone in the game when sophomore midfielder
Josie Jackson-Conner, who played a fine game, sent a long ball toward the Alvernia goal. Speedy freshman
Maresa Savarese ran onto the ball and worked her way around Bock in the box to score her first collegiate goal. It was the Raptors' first goal of the year.
Midway through the first half, a foul in the box gave Alvernia a penalty kick. Freshman Haley Dougherty tied the score with a shot into the left side of the net at 23:20.
Rutgers-Camden regained the lead off a free kick by sophomore back
Amy Maurer at 30:24. Maurer's shot, from 20 yards out on the left side of the box, found the upper right corner.
The Scarlet Raptors outshot their opponents, 7-4, in the opening half and 10-4 in the second half, creating several scoring threats, but it was Alvernia that notched the lone goal after the break. With 8:36 remaining, the Golden Wolves threatened in the box and junior Kalyn Keen finished off the tying goal, assisted by freshman Gabriella Fontana.
The Scarlet Raptors play a non-conference game at Washington College (Chestertown, Maryland) Saturday at 7 p.m.
