CAMDEN, N.J. (Jan. 25, 2023) – The Stockton University women's basketball team outscored Rutgers University-Camden by 10 points in the final quarter as the Ospreys turned a one-point game into a 48-37 victory in a New Jersey Athletic Conference contest here Wednesday night.
The victory lifts Stockton to 10-9 overall and 5-7 in the NJAC, while Rutgers-Camden falls to 2-17 and 0-12.
Stockton has won its last eight games against Rutgers-Camden and leads the all-time series, 68-22.
The game started out as if the Ospreys were primed for a romp as they scored eight straight points to end the first quarter with a 10-2 lead, holding the Scarlet Raptors scoreless for the final 8:52 of the period.
Stockton made it 10 straight points and a 12-2 lead early in the second quarter and increased its lead to 17-5 with 6:38 remaining in the half before Rutgers-Camden rallied. A layup by senior guard/forward
Rahzirah Blocker and a three-pointer by senior guard/forward
Jalissa Pitts cut the gap under double digits to 17-10.
Jalissa Pitts added two more layups and her sister, junior guard
Jania Pitts, drained a three-pointer to cut the Ospreys' halftime lead to 20-17.
Rutgers-Camden tied the game at 24-24 with 4:39 remaining in the third quarter and took a short-lived lead at 27-26 on a
Jalissa Pitts layup late in the frame. Stockton regained the lead for good, however, on a jumper by sophomore guard Nicole Strumolo to take a 28-27 lead into the final quarter.
Stockton scored 12 of the first 14 points in the final period and led by as many as 12 points (46-34) late in the game.
Junior guard Adriyana Jennings finished with a double-double of 10 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots to pace the Ospreys, while Strumolo had a team-high 13 points.
Jalissa Pitts notched a game-high 19 points to pull within four points of the 1,000-point club for her career. She can become the 15th player in program history to reach the milestone when the Raptors play a 4 p.m. game at Rutgers-Newark Saturday.
Jalissa Pitts also added 10 rebounds for the second double-double of her senior season and the 10th of her career.
Blocker, meanwhile, collected 12 points and came within one foul shot of tying the program record for consecutive successful foul shots. She went 2-for-3 from the line, missing her second foul shot, to snap a streak of 20 straight free throws over five games. The record of 21 was set by Cara Racobaldo Jan. 7-29, 2015. Blocker's streak was helped by a perfect 11-for-11 from the foul line against Montclair State Jan. 21, one shy of the best perfect performance, a 12-for-12 showing by Karima Blackwell against Rowan University on Feb. 16, 2008.
Jania Pitts, meanwhile, notched six points, five rebounds and a game- and career-high five steals.
Stockton shot 17-for-46 (37.0 percent) from the floor, while Rutgers-Camden was 14-for-56 (25.0). The Ospreys held a 48-30 advantage off the boards.
