CAMDEN, N.J. (Oct. 11, 2023) – The Rowan University men's soccer team swarmed around the Rutgers University-Camden goal most of the night here Wednesday, but just when it appeared that the Scarlet Raptors might escape with a one-goal victory, the Profs notched the tying goal.
Rowan junior back Turlough Gartlan headed in the tying goal off a throw-in with 1:54 remaining to give the Profs a 1-1 tie in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game in front of 217 fans.
The tie leaves the Scarlet Raptors with an 8-4-2 record overall and a 3-1-1 mark in the NJAC. Rowan stands at 4-3-5 overall and 2-2-1 in conference play.
Rutgers-Camden scored early on what turned out to be its only shot of the game in the fifth minute. Junior back
Pedro Jovel-Castro hit a diagonal ball across the field to the far right side for freshman forward
Jason Angel. Angel attacked down the right flank and hit a high shot into the net for his team-leading fifth goal of the season, coming at 4:22.
Rowan spent most of the remainder of the night on the attack, but was thwarted time and again by the Raptor defense and the stellar play of junior goalie
Sean Boen, who finished with 10 saves.
With time winding down, senior midfielder Luke Yates launched a long throw-in into the box from the left side. The 6-foot-5 Gartlan headed it home for his second goal of the season.
Rowan outshot Rutgers-Camden, 21-1 and held an 11-0 advantage in corner kicks. While Boen made 10 saves, Rowan junior keeper Dylan Aportela didn't need to make any saves.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Saturday at 7 p.m. when it travels to Rutgers-Newark for another NJAC game.
