HAVERFORD, Penn. (Oct. 3, 2023) – Rutgers University-Camden's tough non-conference game at Haverford College Tuesday afternoon featured a pair of penalty kicks and the Scarlet Raptors paid the penalty on both of them.
Haverford senior midfielder Tomas Ascoli made his penalty kick at 68:42 and Fords senior keeper Dylan Ioffreda saved the Raptors' PK 11 minutes later as the host team escaped with a 1-0 victory.
The loss snapped a five-game winning streak and a six-game unbeaten streak for the Scarlet Raptors, who earlier in the day had jumped into the United Soccer Coaches Region IV ranking at number seven. Rutgers-Camden falls to 8-3-1 with its first loss since Sept. 13 at Cabrini.
Haverford, which has played a brutal schedule this season, improves to 2-2-7. In the last seven meetings between the teams, dating back to 2015, Haverford is now 3-2-2 against Rutgers-Camden in that span and all the decisions between the teams have been one-goal affairs except the Fords' 3-0 win in 2015.
Rutgers-Camden out-shot Haverford, 14-13, including 5-3 in shots on goal, while also holding a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. Late in the scoreless game, however, a trip in the penalty box earned the Fords a penalty kick and Ascoli placed it past Raptor junior keeper
Sean Boen and into the left side of the net at 68:42 for the lone goal of the game. The goal also broke a long scoreless streak of 477:39 for Boen, in addition to a four-game shutout streak.
Rutgers-Camden had its own opportunity to tie the game with 10:13 remaining after Haverford was called for a foul in the box during a Raptor corner kick. Ioffreda, however, dove to his left to save the penalty kick, preserving the 1-0 lead.
Ioffreda finished with five saves. Boen had two, including a spectacular one down the stretch when Haverford nearly added an insurance goal.
Rutgers-Camden returns to New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Saturday with a 5 p.m. game at Kean University, a team ranked third in Region IV and also mentioned as receiving votes toward the national Top 25 poll.
