Indoor track team opens season at FastTrack meet

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (Dec. 1, 2023) – The Rutgers University-Camden indoor track program opened the 2023-24 season here Friday at the FastTrack National Invitational at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
 
The Scarlet Raptors had a strong showing in both the men's and women's 60-meter dash. There were four Raptors in the 31-man field for the men's 60-meter dash, with freshman Robert Bayard finishing third (7.16), sophomore Kenny Cashman 28th (8.14), sophomore Ja'Quan Ortiz 30th (8.30) and freshman Ben Wilson 31st (8.57).
 
The 22-runner field in the women's 60-meter dash featured five Scarlet Raptors, led by senior Carly Malia, who finished 10th (9.28) and freshman Leilani Taylor, who was 11th (9.34). Freshman Lindsay Lopez Trejo finished 18th (9.70), freshman Kaitlyn Novak was 19th (9.75) and freshman Osagiaodouwa Ugowe was 20th (10.11).
 
Taylor also finished 20th in the 20-woman field for the 60-meter hurdles (12.12). For the men's 60-meter hurdles, meanwhile, sophomore Walter Pierce finished 12th (8.84) and freshman Hector Diaz was 18th (9.16) in a field of 27 athletes.
 
The men's 200-meter dash had five Scarlet Raptors among its 61 athletes, with freshman Oluwamayowakun Ojutalayo finishing 12th (22.71), Bayard placing 33rd (23.56), Diaz finishing 55th (25.10), senior Franklin Milord finishing 59th (27.09) and Cashman ending up 61st (28.29). Both Malia (31.69) and Ugowe (34.92) were among the 64 athletes in the women's 200-meter dash, finishing 59th and 62nd, respectively.
 
In the 49-runner field of the women's 400-meter dash, freshman Sydnie Marshall finished 41st (1:11.77), Lopez Trejo was 47th (1:17.32), freshman Matogoma Meite was 48th (1:30.76) and junior Adriana Bradley was 49th (1:40.52).
 
The men's 400-meter dash included 55 athletes, with the Raptors finishing 52nd through 55th behind Milord  (1:03.97), Wilson (1:04.04), freshman Dontay Benson (1:05.17) and freshman Eli Ochir-Goryaev (1:07.48).
 
In the women's 800-meter run, sophomore Isabella Bordon finished 13th (2:37.55) and Lopez was 21st (3:13.64) out of 28 athletes. The men's 800 featured 30 runners, including Raptor freshman Angel Chaj, who finished 28th (2:21.66).
 
Among the field events, junior Francis Hill finished 21st out of 28 in the women's shot put (8.59 M) and Novak placed 22nd (8.47 M), while the men's shot put had 33 competitors, including a pair of Raptor freshmen. Aaron Le finished 24th (10.54 M) and Dyheim Watson was 27th (10.27 M).
 
The men's long jump had a field of 46 athletes, with sophomore Brandon Butts finishing 42nd (5.35 M), Ortiz placing 45th (5.14 M) and Pierce ending up 46th (5.01 M).
 
Novak also competed in the women's weight throw, finishing 21st (5.78 M) out of 23 athletes. Le and Watson finished 23rd (9.25 M) and 24th (7.38 M), respectively, out of 27 athletes in the men's weight throw.
 
Rutgers-Camden also competed in the 4x400 relay for both the men and the women. The women finished 14th of 14 (4:53.18) with a team of Taylor, Malia, Marshall and Bordon. The men were 18th of 18 (3:47.19) with a team of sophomore Nadir Paige, Bayard, Ortiz and Pierce.
 
Rutgers-Camden returns to action at 4 p.m. Friday when it competes at Ursinus College in the Bow-Tie Invitational.
