CAMDEN, N.J. (April 26, 2023) – The College of New Jersey women's tennis team has been the New Jersey Athletic Conference champion for as long as the NJAC has had the sport.
The top-seeded Lions (14-4) will get a chance to win their 40th straight NJAC title Saturday, as they blanked fourth-seeded Rutgers University-Camden, 5-0, in the NJAC semifinals here Wednesday.
TCNJ will host second-seeded New Jersey City University Saturday. NJCU defeated third-seeded Stockton, 5-2, in Wednesday's other semifinal.
Rutgers-Camden, which had won five straight matches, including the last three against NJAC teams to reach the conference semifinals, closes its season at 8-9.
TCNJ is now 14-0 all-time against Rutgers-Camden and the Scarlet Raptors have never won a set against the Lions. During the regular season, TCNJ beat Rutgers-Camden, 9-0, on March 26 in Camden.
Only five wins were needed to clinch Wednesday's semifinal, so four matches in progress went unfinished, although TCNJ was leading in each one. The Lions opened their afternoon by sweeping all three doubles matches, with Raptor junior
Sarah Ahrens and senior
Laurel DiStefano losing at first doubles, 8-3, junior
Samantha Hoban and freshman
Katie Moore falling at second doubles, 8-0, and freshman
Ashton Sirko and senior
Lindsay Hernandez being beaten at third doubles, 8-0.
In the two singles matches that were completed, the Scarlet Raptors were swept, 6-0, 6-0, in both of them, with Moore playing at third singles and Hernandez competing at the sixth spot.
At first singles, Ahrens was trailing, 6-2, 1-0, when the match was clinched. Hoban was behind at second singles, 6-1, 4-1, and DiStefano trailed at the fourth flight, 6-1. Sirko was behind at fifth singles, 6-0, 5-0.
