CAMDEN, NJ (April 3, 2023) – Freshmen Jacob Watson and Gavin Cunard have played a major role in the success of the Rutgers University-Camden baseball team this season and the duo combined to sweep New Jersey Athletic Conference baseball rookie honors today.
 
Watson, the Raptors' right fielder, was named NJAC Rookie of the Week and Cunard, the hard-throwing reliever, captured NJAC Rookie Pitcher of the Week. It was the second honor of the season for both players, with Watson previously winning on March 20 and Cunard earning his first honor March 6.
 
The two players gave Rutgers-Camden five weekly baseball honors overall this season, as senior righthander Ethan Carpenter was named the NJAC Pitcher of the Week on March 27.
 
Watson hit .533 during the week (8-for-15) with two runs, two RBIs and two stolen bases to help the Scarlet Raptors post a 2-1 record in three games. He was particularly strong during Saturday's doubleheader split at Kean University, going 3-for-5 with one run, one RBI and one stolen base in both games.
 
For the season, Watson leads the team with a .390 batting average, 30 hits, 24 runs and 20 stolen bases. He is only six steals shy of tying the program's single-season stolen base record.
 
Cunard, meanwhile, earned the victory over Kean in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, working 3.1 shutout innings in his lone appearance of the week. He allowed only two hits, while striking out three. He didn't issue any walks.
 
For the season, he is 2-1 with a 0.64 ERA in 14 innings. He has allowed eight hits, two runs (only one earned) and seven walks, while striking out 18.
 
Rutgers-Camden owns a 12-7 record and will host Cabrini University tonight at 6 p.m. in a non-conference game.
