WILKES-BARRE, Penn. (Sept. 16, 2023) – Persistence paid off for the Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team here Saturday.
Trailing through most of the second half after host Wilkes University scored on a penalty kick, the Scarlet Raptors tied the game with only 55 seconds remaining on a goal by freshman
Jason Angel. As a result, the Raptors and the Colonels finished in a 1-1 deadlock in a non-conference game.
The tie leaves Rutgers-Camden with a 3-2-1 record, while Wilkes stands at 1-2-2.
Wilkes took a 1-0 lead in the 68th minute on a penalty kick by junior Colin Schulmeister. The rest of the way, Rutgers-Camden fired eight shots and added two corner kicks, with the seventh shot being the lucky winner. Angel's team-leading third goal of the season found the net with only 55 seconds remaining. His three goals have included two game-winning tallies and one game-tying score this season.
Rutgers-Camden held a 20-11 advantage in shots, including a 17-9 margin in the second half. The Scarlet Raptors also had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Junior goalie
Sean Boen made four saves for the Scarlet Raptors. Graduate student Nick Kinzler had seven saves in goal for the Colonels.
The Scarlet Raptors return to action Monday with a 7 p.m. game at Immaculata University. After that game, they return home on Wednesday to play Penn State-Abington at 7 p.m. for their first game in Camden since Sept. 2.
