CAMDEN, N.J. (Sept. 2, 2023) – The young guns are making quite an impression early in the season for the Rutgers-Camden men's soccer team and three of the freshmen standouts had a hand in both goals here Saturday on the final day of the 22nd annual Cialella Soccer Classic.
Jason Angel and
Miguel Graterol scored goals and
Rohan Castillo collected an assist as Rutgers-Camden blanked Eastern University, 2-0, to raise its record to 2-0-0. The Scarlet Raptors posted a pair of shutouts over the two-day classic, which is named for former Rutgers-Camden athlete, coach and athletic director Ed Cialella.
In a tight game that was scoreless well into the second half, Angel finally broke the deadlock at 60:39. He ripped a direct kick between an Eastern defensive wall and into the left side of the goal from just outside the box. It was his team-leading second goal of the season. Both of them have been the game-winning tally.
The Raptors added an insurance goal at 70:38 when two freshmen combined for their first collegiate points. Graterol scored from the left side of the box off a fine feed from Castillo.
Rutgers-Camden held a 14-9 advantage in shots and a 7-1 margin in corner kicks, with junior goalie
Sean Boen making three saves to earn his second shutout. He had plenty of support from a starting back line that included senior
Eric Swen and junior
Nick Yurcho at centerback, along with wing backs in junior
Pedro Jovel-Castro and another standout freshman,
Jason Garwood. Another key back off the bench was senior
Quincy Attobrah.
Eastern goalie Ty Bleiler made five saves.
The Scarlet Raptors return to action Tuesday with a 7 p.m. game at Neumann University.
