CAMDEN, N.J. (Sept. 20, 2023) – For the first time in 18 days, the Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team was able to play a game on its own pitch here Wednesday night.
The homecoming proved successful in a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Penn State-Abington.
The win lifts the Scarlet Raptors' record to 5-2-1, including two consecutive victories and a 2-0-1 mark in their last three games. The Lions fell to 2-3-2 with their third straight one-goal defeat.
After a scoreless first half, the Raptors scored the only goal they needed in the 53rd minute off a scramble in front of the net near the left post. The goal came off the foot of senior
Eric Swen, a starting back who was moved up top later in the game. It was his third goal of the season, all coming in the last two games, and his first career game-winning goal at Rutgers-Camden. He was assisted by freshman
Jason Angel, the team leader in goals (4), assists (3) and points (11).
Rutgers-Camden held a slim 7-6 advantage in shots, but Penn State-Abington put five of its shots on goal, including a bullet late in the game by Arsene Bado that was saved by Raptor junior keeper
Sean Boen. Boen finished with five saves to earn his fourth shutout of the season.
Penn State-Abington had a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks, including 4-0 in the second half.
Lions senior keeper Matt Sheldon finished with two saves.
Rutgers-Camden opens its New Jersey Athletic Conference schedule with a 4 p.m. game at William Paterson University on Saturday.
