CAMDEN, N.J. (Sept. 30, 2023) – Freshman forward
Allen Jarrin scored the game's lone goal midway through the second half off a feed from fellow freshman
Rohan Castillo as the Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team edged New Jersey City University, 1-0, in a tight New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Saturday afternoon.
The victory was the 225th for Head Coach
Tim Oswald in his 18th year at Rutgers-Camden, giving him 45 percent of the 495 total wins in a program that started in 1958. Oswald owns a stellar 225-107-49 record with the Scarlet Raptors.
Rutgers-Camden stretched its winning streak to five games, with the last four coming by shutout scores, for the Raptors' longest victory string since eight straight from Sept. 18-Oct. 10, 2018. The victory lifted the Raptors' record to 8-2-1 overall and 3-0 in the NJAC, tied with Montclair State for first place in the conference and a half-game ahead of 2-0 Rowan, which had one of its early-season NJAC games postponed.
NJCU, which has had to face all three of the conference leaders to start its season, fell to 4-4-2 overall and 0-3 in the NJAC.
Rutgers-Camden has now gone 17-0-4 against NJCU since the Gothic Knights' last series win in 2005, but Saturday's victory wasn't easy. NJCU outplayed Rutgers-Camden in the first half with advantages of 9-4 in shots and 5-0 in corner kicks, respectively. Raptor junior goalie
Sean Boen made all five of his saves in the opening half on the way to his seventh shutout of the season, including his fourth straight shutout.
During the second half, both teams had five shots and the Raptors had the lone corner kick, but the game was still scoreless until Castillo chipped a through ball that split the Gothic Knight defense. Jarrin ran onto the ball and arrived before NJCU goalie Nick Linebaugh could reach it, using a deft touch to chip a shot over Linebaugh and into the net. It was his third goal of the season and second game-winning goal.
NJCU finished with advantages of 14-9 in shots and 5-1 in corner kicks. The Gothic Knights held a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal, with Boen making his five saves and Linebaugh netting one.
Rutgers-Camden returns to play Tuesday with a non-conference game at Haverford College, beginning at 4 p.m.
