Big run helps Stockton women defeat Rutgers-Camden

GALLOWAY, N.J. (Jan. 24, 2024) – The Stockton University women's basketball team went on a 23-point run over the end of the second quarter and start of the third quarter as it defeated Rutgers University-Camden, 54-34, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Wednesday night.

Stockton, which entered the game tied for first place in the NJAC with Kean University, improves to 13-6 overall and 10-3 in the conference with its fourth straight win.

Stockton has defeated the Scarlet Raptors in its last 10 meetings and leads the all-time series, 68-22. The last Rutgers-Camden win in the series came on Nov. 28, 2018 in Stockton by a 76-70 score.

Rutgers-Camden fell to 0-19 overall and 0-11 in the NJAC.

The Scarlet Raptors led only once, at 2-0, but were only down by two points, 8-6, after one quarter. A pair of foul shots by senior guard Rahzirah Blocker to open the second quarter tied the game at 8-8, but those were the last points the Raptors scored until midway through the third quarter. Stockton rattled off the last 14 points of the second quarter to take a 22-8 halftime lead. The Ospreys scored the first nine points of the third quarter before a layup by freshman forward A'yanna Morton ended the 23-point run and made the score 31-10.

Four Ospreys scored in double figures, led by sophomore forward Grace Speer with 12 points. A trio of Stockton players – fifth-year forward Trina Deveney-Bethea, senior guard Madison Dulude and sophomore guard Imene Fathi – scored 10 points apiece. Deveney-Bethea and Dulude had eight rebounds apiece to help the Ospreys hold a 40-37 edge off the boards. Dulude added a game-high seven steals, Deveney-Bethea had seven blocked shots and Fathi notched seven assists and five steals.

Blocker collected her seventh double-double of the year with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Senior guard Jania Pitts added seven points and Morton scored six. Both Morton and sophomore guard/forward Taja Brown had five rebounds. Pitts added a team-high three assists.

Blocker's 12 points lifted her career total to 1,034, only three shy of tying Andrea Fogel (1986-89) for 15th place on the program's all-time list.

Rutgers-Camden shot 9-for-45 (20.0 percent) from the floor and went 16-for-19 (84.2) from the line, led by an 8-for-8 night from Blocker and a 5-for-5 performance by Pitts.

Stockton shot 24-for-62 (38.7) from the floor and 4-for-7 (57.1) from the line.

The Scarlet Raptors return to NJAC action Saturday when they host Rutgers-Newark at 3 p.m.
