Women's tennis sweeps WPU to inch closer to NJAC playoff spot

MEDFORD, N.J. (April 17, 2024) – Rainy weather forced a change of venue here Wednesday as the Rutgers University-Camden women's tennis team switched from a match on its own courts to an indoor venue at the Arrowhead Tennis Club in Medford.

The new site didn't make a difference as the Scarlet Raptors evened their NJAC record with a 9-0 victory over William Paterson University.

Rutgers-Camden improved to 2-2 in the NJAC and 8-6 overall, moving closer to a spot in the upcoming NJAC semifinals, where the Raptors will most likely draw the fourth seed. That would set up a match at top-seeded The College of New Jersey on April 24.

Paterson fell to 2-8 overall and 0-4 in conference play.

Rutgers-Camden was aided by the play of sophomore Jackie Zuniga Arevalo, who made her collegiate tennis debut after joining the program this spring. She won a 6-0, 6-4 decision at sixth singles and teamed with freshman Alyssa Peacock for an 8-5 victory at third doubles.

Rutgers-Camden sophomore co-captains Katie Moore and Ashton Sirko posted an 8-0 win at first doubles, while junior Jayde Sue Silva and freshman Bella Martinez won, 8-1, at second doubles.

Moore posted a 6-0, 6-1 win at first singles, Silva won at second singles (6-0, 6-0) and Sirko posted a 6-0, 6-3 victory at third singles. In the fourth spot, Peacock won, 6-0, 6-0, while Martinez won by the same score at the fifth flight.

The results boosted Silva to 12 singles victories this season, tying for fourth on the single-season program list. Sirko, meanwhile, notched her 10th doubles victory, tying for ninth on the single-season list. Nine of those doubles wins have come with Moore, giving the pair the fifth-highest single-season total for a doubles combination. Silva and Martinez are right behind them with eight doubles wins as a team.

For career totals, Moore owns 17 singles victories (12th), 19 doubles wins (tied for ninth) and 36 total wins (tied for 11th).

The Scarlet Raptors return to action Friday when they entertain SUNY-Oneonta in a 3 p.m. match.
