CAMDEN, N.J. (April 23, 2024) – The nationally-ranked Rowan University softball team collected 20 hits and 20 runs as it swept Rutgers University-Camden in a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader here Tuesday.
The Profs won a five-inning opening game, 12-1, before taking an 8-2 victory in the nightcap.
While Rowan had 20 hits in the twin bill, Rutgers-Camden was limited to seven on the day. Freshman
Alana Gannon went 2-for-2 with a pinch hit in each game, including a double in the second game. Freshman right fielder
Kali Baker went 2-for-4 with one run scored.
Rowan, ranked No. 14 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III Top 25 poll, improves to 29-7 overall and 14-2 in the NJAC. Rutgers-Camden falls to 14-22 overall and 5-11 in the conference with two conference games remaining at Rutgers-Newark on Saturday.
Before the Newark doubleheader, Rutgers-Camden will play Thursday with a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader at Neumann University.
Rowan 12, Rutgers-Camden 1
The Profs scored twice in the first inning on three hits and an error and opened up the game with four runs in the third inning and six in the fifth inning. The big sixth inning featured four hits, two walks and two Raptor errors.
Freshman right fielder Zara MacNair went 3-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and one RBI to pace the 11-hit Rowan attack. Junior second baseman Liz McCaffery went 2-for-3 with a walk, three runs and two RBIs, while senior shortstop Payton MacNair was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Sophomore left fielder Abigail Pawlowski went 2-for-2 with two RBIs.
Rowan junior Rylee Lutz pitched a three-hitter over her five-inning complete game, allowing one earned run and three walks, while striking out three.
Rutgers-Camden scored its lone run in the bottom of the third inning after a one-out single by senior designated player
Kamryn Kenedy and a walk to senior shortstop
Meg Gray. A grounder to first base advanced the runners and Kennedy scored on a wild pitch.
Rowan 8, Rutgers-Camden 2
Rowan scored in every inning except the first inning. It built a 5-0 lead before Rutgers-Camden plated its two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on two hits and a big throwing error by sophomore winning pitcher Emily McCutcheon. The inning started with back-to-back singles by senior center fielder
Alexa McNee and Baker, whose infield single was thrown away by McCutcheon, allowing McNee to come all the way around to score. Junior catcher
Kendall Lafferty drove home Baker with a ground out.
Senior third baseman Breanna Bryant went 2-for-2 with two runs and one RBI for Rowan.
McCutcheon raised her sparkling record to 17-1 with a four-hitter, allowing just two unearned runs and striking out five.
