MONTCLAIR, N.J. (April 25, 2024) – Junior southpaw
Daniel Robeson hurled 7.2 strong innings and junior first baseman
Diego Salazar powered a two-run home run in the seventh inning to give Rutgers University-Camden the lead as the Scarlet Raptors defeated #20-ranked Montclair State University, 3-2, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Thursday.
Rutgers-Camden improves to 24-12 overall and 9-6 in the NJAC, while Montclair State falls to 26-10 overall and 8-7 in the conference.
Robeson (2-3) pitched six-hit ball in his longest outing of the season, walking only one and allowing one earned run. He struck out five, but found himself trailing most of the game after Montclair State tallied one run in the second inning. The Red Hawks took advantage of a hit batsman and two singles, including a run-scoring hit by sophomore catcher Zach Stearns.
That run held up until the seventh inning, as the Raptors were held off the scoreboard by Montclair State senior pitcher Jack Haveson (7-1) for most of the game. In the seventh inning, however, senior second baseman
Danny Vazquez had a one-out single to left field. One out later, Salazar continued his knack for clutch hits, drilling a two-run home run to left center field. It was his third home run of the season.
The Raptors added what proved to be the winning run in the eighth inning when senior designated hitter
Jack Murphy drilled a leadoff double and was sacrificed to third by senior shortstop
Billy Richards. Another senior, center fielder
Auggie Uzdanovics, delivered Murphy with an RBI single.
Montclair State came back with one run in the bottom of the ninth inning before sophomore
Gavin Cunard nailed down his third save of the season.
Uzdanovics led the Scarlet Raptors' eight-hit attack, going 2-for-3 with one RBI.
The Scarlet Raptors play the back end of their home-and-home series against Montclair State on Friday at 3:30 p.m. in Camden.
