CAMDEN, N.J. (Aug. 30, 2024) – Senior center back
Nick Yurcho headed home a corner kick by sophomore forward
Jason Angel midway through the second half as the Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team edged Neumann University, 1-0, in the season opener for both teams here Friday night.
The game, part of the Scarlet Raptors' annual Cialella Soccer Classic, was a hard-fought contest throughout, as the Scarlet Raptors posted a 1-0 win over Neumann for the second straight season. After falling to the Raptors at home early last year, the Knights went on to advance to the NCAA tournament.
The victory raised Rutgers-Camden's record in season openers to 12-5-2 in the 19th season under Head Coach
Tim Oswald.
Rutgers-Camden outshot Neumann, 8-5, but it was the Scarlet Raptors' 10-2 advantage in corner kicks that eventually proved to be decisive. In the 69th minute, Angel took a corner kick from the right side of the pitch and the 6-foot-4 Yurcho leaped over a mass of players near the far side to head home the winning goal.
Rutgers-Camden senior goalie
Sean Boen made two saves to record his 19th career shutout. Neumann junior Carson Metzger had three saves.
The Scarlet Raptors complete their two-day Cialella Soccer Classic with a 6 p.m. game against Haverford College Saturday.
