CAMDEN, N.J. (Aug. 31, 2024) – The Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team collected two goals in its two-game season-opening Cialella Soccer Classic and the Scarlet Raptors made both of those goals stand up for 1-0 victories.
The latest win came here Saturday when junior
Eric Swen converted a first-half tally that was enough for the Scarlet Raptors to post a wild win over Haverford College in a contest that featured eight yellow cards, with four on each side.
Swen, a starting center back who was the New Jersey Athletic Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Year in 2023, scored his goal moments after a Rutgers-Camden substitution moved him up to his other standout position on the front line. He tallied off a scramble in the box at 33:56 for the only goal of the game.
The win didn't come easily, however, as Haverford outshot the Raptors, 5-1, in the second half, including shots off the crossbar and post. Rutgers-Camden senior goalie
Sean Boen also came up with two saves, in addition to numerous plays that broke up potential threats and controlled the box. It was Boen's second shutout during the Raptors' 2-0 start to the season, hiking his career total to 20.
The victory marks the second straight year that Rutgers-Camden won both of its games at the season-opening Cialella Soccer Classic.
For the game, Haverford held a 7-4 edge in shots, with both teams putting two shots on goal. Rutgers-Camden held a 3-0 margin in corner kicks.
Haverford freshman goalie Simon Bank finished with one save.
The Scarlet Raptors play a 4 p.m. non-conference game Wednesday at Penn State-Abington.
