NEWPORT NEWS, Virgina (Sept. 14, 2024) – The Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team had the tough task of facing a national powerhouse team on its own pitch here Saturday to open a busy weekend trip to Virginia.
Christopher Newport showed why it has received votes toward the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll as it defeated the Scarlet Raptors, 2-0.
The Captains raised their record to 3-0-2. Rutgers-Camden, coming off two games in which it dominated opponents in losing efforts, fell to 3-3.
Christopher Newport scored the only goal it needed in the 34th minute, following a restart. A deflection in the box came out to senior midfielder Jason LaViola on the left side, who buried a hard shot into the net for his first goal of the season.
The Captains notched an insurance goal at 51:20 when junior midfielder Barry Jones found sophomore forward Drew McWhinney streaking into the left side of the box unmarked. McWhinney finished off the play with his first goal of the season on a low shot.
The Captains held an 18-7 advantage in shots and a 5-3 lead in shots on goal. They also had a 6-3 margin in corner kicks.
Both goalies, Raptor senior
Sean Boen and Captain junior Hayden Dewey, made three saves.
The Scarlet Raptors return to action on Sunday, playing in Virginia Beach against Virginia Wesleyan University at 2 p.m.
