CAMDEN, N.J. (Sept. 25, 2024) – Alvernia University senior forward Ryan Cogill notched a hat trick, including the winning goal with 6:11 remaining, as the Golden Wolves defeated Rutgers University-Camden, 3-2, in a non-conference game here Wednesday night.
Alvernia improves to 5-2-2, while Rutgers-Camden falls to 4-4-2.
In a wild game which saw the teams trade leads before Cogill's final goal broke a 2-2 deadlock, Rutgers-Camden took the lead only 6:50 into the contest. Sophomore forward
Jason Angel gathered a loose ball at the top of the box and hit a high shot to the center of the net for his first goal of the season.
Cogill, who raised his scoring output to 10 goals with his hat trick, collected the equalizer in the 23rd minute, heading home a pass into the box by junior forward Connor Kraycik.
Cogill struck again only 2:19 into the second half, scoring on a penalty kick after a Scarlet Raptor foul in the box. While the Scarlet Raptors had chances to tie the game, the score remained 2-1 in favor of the Golden Wolves for the next half hour. In the 78th minute, however, Raptor sophomore forward
Nathan Biersbach took a corner kick to the goalie's right side and sent the ball off the top of the far post and into the net for the tying goal.
Shortly thereafter, the Golden Wolves had an apparent go-ahead goal disallowed by a handball call, but Cogill quickly made that call meaningless. Angling in from the right, he took a pass from graduate student forward Dominic Flower and sent a shot inside the right post at 83:49 for the eventual winning goal.
Rutgers-Camden finished with a 13-10 advantage in shots, including a 10-3 margin in the second half, while Alvernia held an 8-2 lead in corner kicks.
Alvernia senior goalie Evan Solley made seven saves, with six of them coming in the second half. Scarlet Raptor senior keeper
Sean Boen finished with two saves.
Rutgers-Camden starts its New Jersey Athletic Conference schedule on Saturday with a 1 p.m. game at Ramapo College.
