CAMDEN, N.J. (Sept. 24, 2024) – The Rutgers University-Camden and Ramapo College volleyball teams opened their New Jersey Athletic Conference schedule here Tuesday night, and the Scarlet Raptors came away with a big 3-0 sweep to open NJAC play.
Rutgers-Camden won by scores of 25-14, 25-12 and 25-14.
The win lifts the Scarlet Raptors to 4-9 overall and 1-0 in the NJAC, while the Roadrunners fall to 1-7 and 0-1.
With the score tied, 6-6, in the opening set, Rutgers-Camden scored the next three points to take the lead for good, starting with a kill by senior
Kaitlyn Parrish and followed by a pair of Ramapo attack errors. Lading, 11-8, the Raptors received a kill from junior
Jessica Wiemer, assisted by sophomore
JoAnna Andrews, to spark another three-point run which included a service ace from junior
Avery Ang and a Ramapo error. The Scarlet Raptors opened up the set with a six-point run to take a 20-9 lead. The run started with a kill by freshman
Maria Theruviparambil.
In the second set, five attack errors and a kill by sophomore
Mia Owens sparked the Raptors to a 6-2 lead and they went on to post a 25-12 victory. Parrish and Theruviparambil both had a pair of kills in the set, while Wiemer added one.
Down, 3-2, in the third set, Rutgers-Camden rattled off six straight points, including a service ace by Gbolahan. Once Ramapo cut its deficit to 9-8, Rutgers-Camden countered with five consecutive points, aided by a pair of kills from Theruviparambil, a kill by senior
Peyton McGregor and an ace from Gbolahan.
The Scarlet Raptors put the set and the match away by scoring nine consecutive points, ballooning the lead from 14-12 to 23-12. The final eight points came off the serving of Owens and included three kills by Theruviparambil and one by Gbolahan. Andrews had three assists in the run.
For the match, Theruviparambil finished with nine kills and hit .333, while Parrish hit .462 with six kills and four block assists. Gbolahan notched five kills, six block assists, seven digs and three aces.
Andrews finished with 12 assists and four digs, while Ang had 10 digs and five assists. Owens had seven digs and Wiemer collected four block assists.
The Scarlet Raptors travel to Aston, Pennsylvania, on Saturday to play host Neumann University and Arcadia University in a tri-match. The Scarlet Raptors will play matches at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
