CAMDEN, NJ (Nov. 18, 2025) – The Rutgers University-Camden men's basketball team opened up a quick 15-point lead, watched it get whittled down to eight points and went on to defeat Penn State-Abington, 72-52, in a non-conference game here Tuesday night.
The victory lifts the Scarlet Raptors to 4-1, while the Nittany Lions fall to 0-6.
Rutgers-Camden scored the game's first eight points, with a layup by senior forward
Cameron Downs followed by three-pointers from sophomore guards
Keion Elliott and
Chase Ambrosius. The Scarlet Raptors stretched their early leads to 15 points, at 19-4 and 21-6, before Penn State-Abington closed the gap to eight points (27-19) shortly before halftime. A three-pointer by sophomore guard
Caleb Crosby closed out the half, giving the Raptors a 30-19 lead.
Rutgers-Camden maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half, including a pair of 20-point leads at 56-36 and the final margin.
Downs led the Raptors' offense with 19 points, while Crosby added 11. Both Elliott and freshman guard/forward
Gardy Etienne scored nine points, while junior guard
Caleb Edwards added eight.
With his 19 points, Downs hiked his career total to 1,316 points to move into sixth place on the program's all-time list. He passed Cetshwayo Byrd (1,300 points, 1990-94), Isaac Destin (1,302 points, 20215-18 and 2019-20) and is only nine points shy of fifth-place Marvin Young (1977-81).
Sophomore guard
Ryan Senft dished off six assists and had a team-high six rebounds, while Elliott added five assists.
Rutgers-Camden shot 28-for-58 (48.3 percent) from the floor and 9-for-14 (64.3) from the foul line. Abington went 19-for-47 from the floor (40.4) and 13-for-18 (72.2) from the foul line, led by senior guard JoJo Kelly. Kelly scored 17 points, including 8-for-9 shooting from the foul line, while sophomore forward Tyler Meinel notched 16 points and a game-high seven rebounds.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. game at Immaculata University.
