#3/6 Johns Hopkins snaps Raptors' seven-game winning streak

AUBURNDALE, Florida (March 17, 2025) – The nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins University baseball team scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning and went on to defeat Rutgers University-Camden, 9-4, at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational here Monday morning.

The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for the Scarlet Raptors, who received 37 votes last week toward the D3baseball.com Top 25 poll. Rutgers-Camden fell to 10-2 and will play another game on Monday against Ripon College of Ripon, Iowa.

Johns Hopkins, ranked #3 in the D3baseball.com Top 25 and #6 in the ABCA national poll, improved to 12-1.

The Scarlet Raptors took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning after a two-out error allowed junior left fielder Jacob Watson to reach first base. He raced to third on an errant pickoff throw and scored on a double by senior center fielder Steven Shaffer. Junior first baseman Frankie Romond followed with an RBI single.

The Blue Jays struck back with five runs in the bottom of the frame, sandwiching five hits and an error between Raptor senior southpaw Daniel Robeson striking out the side. After an inning-opening strikeout, Hopkins collected three straight singles to cut its gap to 2-1. An error loaded the bases and graduate catcher Caleb Cyr singled home the tying run. A wild pitch plated the go-ahead run and was followed by another RBI single and run-scoring wild pitch.

Rutgers-Camden cut its deficit to 5-3 with a run in the fourth inning. Senior shortstop Billy Richards singled, stole second and scored on a two-out single by sophomore catcher Julian Gonzalez.

Hopkins broke the game open with three runs in the sixth and one in the eighth. Rutgers-Camden scored its final run in the ninth when Gonzalez doubled home junior Evan Carbone, who was hit by a pitch in a pinch-hitting appearance.

Robeson (1-1) took the loss despite striking out 13 batters. He worked 5.2 innings, allowing 10 hits and two walks. He was charged with seven runs, six of them earned.

Rutgers-Camden collected eight hits off four Blue Jays pitchers, with Gonzalez and Romond both going 2-for-4. Gonzalez had two RBIs, while Romond had one.

Graduate second baseman Jimmy Stevens led the 12-hit Johns Hopkins attack, going 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs.
