CAMDEN, N.J. (Aug. 29, 2025) – Senior forward Kamille Purcell scored two goals and added one assist, and junior defender Colleen Fanning added two goals as the Stevenson University women's soccer team defeated Rutgers University-Camden, 4-1, in the season opener for both teams.
The game was the nightcap of a season-opening soccer doubleheader in the 24th annual Cialella Soccer Classic, which was named for former Rutgers-Camden athlete, coach and athletic director Ed Cialella. The day started with the men's team defeating St. John Fisher University, 4-0.
Purcell got the Mustangs started only 3:16 into the game when she tucked a shot just inside the left post, assisted by junior midfielder Karly Sheahan. That was the only goal of the first half and Rutgers-Camden applied plenty of pressure early in the second half but couldn't get the equalizer.
Stevenson made it a 2-0 game at 68:01, with Fanning scoring off an assist from Purcell. Purcell scored in the 73rd minute, assisted by sophomore Katelyn Lacey, and Fanning completed the Mustangs' scoring in the 85th minute, assisted by freshman Jalynn Mayfield-Rice.
Rutgers-Camden broke the shutout with 44 seconds remaining on the first career goal by sophomore forward
Victoria Piteri. She scored off a scramble near the left post.
The Scarlet Raptors held an 11-6 advantage in shots and the Mustangs held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. Stevenson freshman keeper Isabella Serano made three saves and came within 44 seconds of a shutout in her first game. Raptor junior keeper
