The win lifted the Raptors to 10-7 overall and 5-6 in the NJAC, while the Roadrunners fell to 4-14 overall and 3-8 in the conference. The victory evened the season series between the two teams after Ramapo earned a one-point win in Mahway on Dec. 6, and it snapped the Roadrunners' four-game winning streak against the Scarlet Raptors. Ramapo leads the all-time series, 60-18.
Downs, who is third on the program's career scoring list, entered the game needing only nine points to become the third player in program history to reach the 1,500-point milestone. Not only did he roll past that mark to 1,525, but he came within three points of his career high of 37, set against Maine Maritime on Nov. 15. He shot 14-for-23 from the floor, including 5-for-10 from three-point range, and went 1-for-1 from the foul line.
Rutgers-Camden jumped out to a quick 18-6 lead before the Roadrunners narrowed the gap to 30-22 by halftime. After the Scarlet Raptors scored the first five points of the second half to grab a 35-22 lead, Ramapo responded with a 24-10 run, taking its first lead since the game's opening field goal, at 46-45. The teams changed leads seven times after that point, with the Scarlet Raptors finally taking the lead for good at 54-53 on a layup by freshman forward
Makai Crawford with 2:33 remaining.
In addition to Downs, Benjamin added 12 points to hike his career total to 788. Downs led the Raptors with eight rebounds, while sophomore guard
Ryan Senft had seven points, seven rebounds and a game- and career-high eight assists.
Ramapo received 16 points from junior forward Nahum Lewis and a game-high 13 rebounds from 6-foot-6 senior forward Orion Mickens.
Both teams grabbed 33 rebounds in the game.
Rutgers-Camden shot 25-for-63 from the floor (39.7 percent), including 9-for-34 (26.5) from three-point range. The Raptors were 1-for-1 from the line. Ramapo went 20-for-46 (43.5) from the floor, including 5-for-15 (.33.3) from three-point range. The Roadrunners were 10-for-14 from the foul line.
Rutgers-Camden returns to NJAC action on Wednesday with a 5:30 p.m. home game at Rowan University.
