CAMDEN, N.J. (Jan. 31, 2026) – After a heart-breaking double-overtime loss at Rowan University on Wednesday night, the Rutgers University-Camden women's basketball team needed a huge win here Saturday against one of the top teams in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.
The Scarlet Raptors accomplished that feat in a big way as they outlasted Montclair State University, 70-66, for their first win over the Red Hawks since Jan. 9, 2019 (57-45 in Camden).
Not only did the victory snap a 12-game losing streak against Montclair State, but it also raised the Raptors to 11-9 overall and 8-5 in the NJAC. The Scarlet Raptors are locked in a four-way tie for third place in the conference with Montclair State, Rowan and Stockton with five games remaining in the regular season.
Montclair State fell to 12-8 overall and 8-5 in NJAC play.
Rutgers-Camden pulled out the win with a 28-18 fourth-quarter run to erase Montclair State's 48-42 lead through three quarters. The Scarlet Raptors tied the game at 53-53 with 7:22 remaining in the contest on a pair of foul shots by sophomore forward
Courtney Edmundo and took their first lead since early in the third quarter when junior guard
Gabriella Toledo hit a big three-pointer to make it a 56-53 game.
Montclair State rallied back to take a 60-58 lead in the final two minutes on a trey by senior guard Alexis Strollo, but a three-point play by Edmundo helped the Raptors regain the lead, 61-60. The lead swapped hands four more times down the stretch before Rutgers-Camden took the lead for good, 65-64, on a pair of foul shots by junior guard/forward
Tamea El, who had a huge game with 24 points to tie her Rutgers-Camden career high.
With the Scarlet Raptors clinging to a 68-66 lead in the final seconds, Toledo hit a pair of free throws to wrap up the win.
El, a first-year player at Rutgers-Camden, matched her Raptor high of 24 points set against Rutgers-Newark on Jan. 21. Edmundo added 20 points and a career-high tying 16 rebounds to record her sixth straight double-double and her 11th of the season. Her 16 rebounds hiked her career mark past the 400 milestone to 409.
Toledo, another first-year Scarlet Raptor, finished with 17 points to pass her previous Rutgers-Camden high of 14, set against Kean University on Jan. 10.
Montclair State received a double-double from sophomore forward Alyssa Craigwell, who scored 21 points and added 11 rebounds. Strollo notched 20 points.
Rutgers-Camden shot 23-for-58 from the floor (39.7 percent) and 19-for-29 from the foul line (65.5), while Montclair State went 23-for-54 (42.6) from the floor and 12-for-21 (57.1) from the line. The Scarlet Raptors held a 38-37 edge off the boards and forced five more turnovers than they committed, 19-14.
Rutgers-Camden returns to NJAC action on Wednesday with a 5 p.m. game at The College of New Jersey.
