CAMDEN, N.J. (March 4, 2026) – Freshman
Gabe McCracken and junior
Michael Whitmore combined on a three-hit shutout and sophomore catcher
Mason Blizzard broke a scoreless tie with an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Rutgers University-Camden baseball team defeated York College of Pennsylvania, 3-0, here Wednesday.
With their second straight win, the Scarlet Raptors evened their record at 2-2. York fell to 1-4.
Both McCracken and York freshman starter CJ Scism held their opponents hitless through three innings before each team collected a single in the fourth inning. McCracken finished with five innings of one-hit shutout ball, striking out eight, hitting four batters and allowing no walks in his first collegiate start. Scism, meanwhile, threw one-hit shutout ball through four innings.
Rutgers-Camden finally broke the scoreless deadlock in the seventh inning against York junior Sam Ross (0-1). With two outs, sophomore shortstop
Chris Smith kept the inning alive with a single to right field. He scored moments later when Blizzard lined a double into the right-center field gap.
The Scarlet Raptors tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning against sophomore Jake Ludwig. Junior center fielder
Jacob Watson hit a leadoff single to left field and stole second. He advanced on an infield single by junior second baseman
Austin Dubler. Dubler stole second base and sophomore right fielder
Jake Slusarski walked to load the bases. Ludwig nearly worked out of the jam with a 1-2-3 double play, but sophomore designated hitter
Ryan Joseph produced a huge two-out, two-run single to right field.
Whitmore, in his first season at Rutgers-Camden after pitching at both Mercer County Community College and Neumann University, finished off the combined shutout for his first decision as a Scarlet Raptor. He retired the last seven batters he faced and ended up allowing two hits in four shutout innings. He struck out five and didn't walk a batter.
Watson and Smith both went 2-for-3 for Rutgers-Camden, while senior left fielder Alex Neeld collected two of the Spartans' three hits, going 2-for-3.
The Scarlet Raptors return to action on Saturday when they host a non-conference doubleheader against Ursinus College, beginning at 12 p.m.
