CAMDEN, N.J. (April 14, 2026) – The Rutgers University-Camden baseball team took a break from its New Jersey Athletic Conference schedule to honor six departing players in a Senior Night game here Tuesday.
Unfortunately for the Scarlet Raptors, Alvernia University spoiled the festivities as the Golden Wolves posted a 10-6 victory in a long non-conference game that featured 25 hits, eight walks, six hit batsmen and four errors over a period of 3:39.
The win lifts Alvernia to 15-17, while Rutgers-Camden falls to 14-16.
Prior to the game, the Scarlet Raptors honors seniors
Evan Carbone, Gavin Cunard, Justin Figueroa, Dylan Oliver, John Ormsby IV and
Ricky Snyder. Oliver, a four-year lefty bullpen specialist, made the first start of his Rutgers-Camden career.
Rutgers-Camden scored a pair of runs in the first inning, sparked by a leadoff double from sophomore right fielder
Gavin McCaffrey and a walk to sophomore designated hitter
Jake Slusarski. Junior center fielder
Jacob Watson singled to left field and McCaffrey advanced to third before scoring on an outfield throwing error. Sophomore
Chris Smith plated Slusarski with a sacrifice fly.
Alvernia countered with a run in the second and two in the third to grab a 3-2 lead. Rutgers-Camden tied the game in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single by Smith before Alvernia took the lead for good in the top of the fourth inning. A hit batsman and three singles produced two runs and the Golden Wolves built their lead to 10-5 through seven innings.
Rutgers-Camden rallied with two outs in the ninth inning as junior left fielder
Matt McAleer was hit by a pitch and scored on a double by sophomore third baseman
Michael McGinley. Sophomore first baseman
Ryan Joseph was hit by a pitch to end the night for Alvernia freshman Michael Klawansky, who hurled 4.1 innings of long relief to pick up the win. Senior Michael Andrew relieved Klawansky and after walking Carbone to load the bases, he ended the game with a strikeout.
Alvernia collected 15 hits off of seven Scarlet Raptor pitchers, with junior shortstop Bobby Hansen going 4-for-5 and both junior second baseman Timmy Hitchcock and freshman right fielder Max Hansen going 3-for-5.
Rutgers-Camden collected 10 hits, including a 3-for-5 night from McCaffrey. Watson, Smith and Carbone added two hits apiece.
Rutgers-Camden returns to play on Thursday, hosting a 3:30 p.m. NJAC game against Stockton University.
