Brooklyn College outlasts Rutgers-Camden

Box Score BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Junior forward Egzon Gjonbalaj (Brooklyn, NY/Franklin D. Roosevelt) collected 13 points, nine assists and six steals to help the Brooklyn College men's basketball team outlast Rutgers University-Camden, 73-69, in a non-conference game here Tuesday night.

Brooklyn, which lost to the nation's top-ranked team, Amherst College, in its season opener, evens its record at 1-1.

Rutgers-Camden, which dropped its opener against Division II Millersville University, falls to 0-2.

The Scarlet Raptors trailed, 41-32, at halftime and 13 points (61-48) midway through the second half, but closed the gap to four points on four occasions in the last six minutes. The final four-point margin – and eventually the final score of 73-69 – came with 24 seconds remaining on a layup by junior guard/forward Teon Russell (Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson). The Scarlet Raptors had a chance to cut into that margin in the last 24 seconds, but had a pair of turnovers.

In addition to the big all-around night by Gjonbalaj, sophomore guard Jamel Gist (Brooklyn, NY/Newsome) notched a team-high 14 points for the Bulldogs. Junior guard Jai Kellman (Brooklyn, NY/George Westinghouse) added 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Rutgers-Camden held a commanding 50-37 advantage off the boards, led by Russell, who had game highs of 13 rebounds and 15 points for his second double-double in as many games this season. The Raptors, however, had 24 turnovers to the Bulldogs' 14 and, despite heading to the foul line five more times than the home team, shot only 17-for-27 (63.0) from the charity stripe. Brooklyn shot 14-for-22 (63.6).

Junior guard/forward Alex Smart (Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek) added 14 points, seven rebounds and a team-high five assists for Rutgers-Camden, while freshman guard Marcus Taylor (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) had 12 points.

Senior forward Shaliek Johnson (Camden, NJ/Pennsauken Tech) added nine points and eight rebounds.

Rutgers-Camden returns to action Tuesday, Nov. 26, when it hosts Rowan University in an 8 p.m. New Jersey Athletic Conference game.
