WILLIAMSPORT, Penn. – Senior forward
Kevin Anthony (Columbus, OH/Bridgton Academy, ME) notched a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds as one of five Lycoming College players in double figures, helping the Warriors outlast Rutgers University-Camden, 91-77, in a non-conference basketball game here Sunday.
Lycoming improves to 4-1, while Rutgers-Camden falls to 1-3.
In a fast-paced first half, the teams were tied three times before the Warriors established a 41-37 advantage at the break. Down by nine points (23-14), the Scarlet Raptors went on a 14-5 run to tie the game at 28-28 before the Warriors regrouped to take the halftime edge.
Sophomore guard
John Monkam (Lanham, MD/DuVal) scored 11 first-half points for Lycoming, while junior guard/forward
Teon Russell (Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson) had a high of 16 first-half points for the Scarlet Raptors.
The second half was tight most of the way as well as the two teams battled to a 53-53 deadlock, their seventh tie of the game, before Lycoming took the lead for good. A jumper by Monkam with 12:49 remaining gave the Warriors a 55-53 edge and sparked Lycoming on a seven-point run.
The home team went on to build its lead to double digits for the first time at 73-63. The closest the Raptors came the rest of the way was five points (76-71), after which Lycoming countered with seven straight points to put the game away.
Monkam finished with a team-high 15 points for Lycoming, while sophomore guard
William Wingate (Philadelphia, PA/Master Charter) notched 14, Anthony canned 13 and sophomore guard
Armani Taylor (Upper Marlboro, MD/Bowie) added 11.
Senior forward
Michael Rudy (Danville, PA/Danville) scored 10 points and nearly had a double-double, finishing with eight rebounds for the Warriors. He also added a game-high four blocked shots and dished off five assists to tie teammate
Jourdan Wilson (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) for game-high honors.
Freshman guard
Marcus Taylor (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) notched a game-high 23 points for Rutgers-Camden, shooting 9-for-15 from the floor and 5-for-8 from the foul line. Russell finished with 22 points, eight rebounds and a team-high three assists, while junior guard/forward
Alex Smart (Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek) added 16 points.
Senior forward
Shaliek Johnson (Camden, NJ/Pennsauken Tech) also had a big game for the Scarlet Raptors, collecting game highs of 14 rebounds and four steals. He also added six points and two assists.
Lycoming shot 32-for-58 (55.2 percent) from the floor, including 6-for-10 (60.0) from three-point range. The Warriors were 21-for-28 (75.0) from the foul line and also held a 42-41 edge off the boards.
Rutgers-Camden shot 28-for-74 (37.8) from the floor, including only 3-for-19 (15.8) from three-point range. The Raptors were 18-for-28 (64.3) from the charity stripe.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Wednesday when it plays an 8 p.m. New Jersey Athletic Conference game at Ramapo College.
