MADISON, N.J. – One early goal was the deciding strike as the St. Joseph's College-Long Island women's soccer team edged Rutgers University-Camden, 1-0, here Sunday at the FDU Fall Classic.

The Golden Eagles scored only 51 seconds into the game and hung on to defeat the Scarlet Raptors, raising their record to 2-0.

Rutgers-Camden fell to 0-2 despite holding a 14-12 advantage in shots, including an 8-5 margin in the second half, and a 5-4 lead in corner kicks.
The Scarlet Raptors allowed a quick goal for the second straight day when Golden Eagles junior midfielder Katelyn Chiasera (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) slid a pass to the left of the box less than a minute into the game. Junior forward Jennifer Martino (East Patchogue, NY/Bellport) finished the play with a blast into the far right panel at 0:51.

In Saturday's season-opening 2-1 loss to host FDU-Florham, the Scarlet Raptors allowed the first goal only 3:57 into the game.

Rutgers-Camden had a few good scoring chances in the second half, including a missed penalty kick that went over the crossbar. The Raptors also were thwarted by a clutch play from St. Joseph sophomore goalie Christiana Votta (East Islip, NY/East Islip), who broke up a dangerous pass from Raptor freshman midfielder Catherine Fiore (Oaklyn, NJ/Paul VI) only a step or two away from connecting with junior midfielder Lacey Stackhouse (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Township).

Both Votta and Rutgers-Camden senior goalie Lauren West (Mantua, NJ/Clearview Regional) made six saves apiece.

The Scarlet Raptors return to action Sunday at the FDU Fall Classic, facing St. Joseph's College-Long Island at 2:30 p.m.
