Gothic Knights edge Scarlet Raptors in OT

Box Score JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Junior forward Drew Marley (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) hit the first of two free throws with 1:31 remaining in overtime and the New Jersey City University men's basketball team hung on to edge Rutgers University-Camden, 39-38, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference men's basketball game here Wednesday night.

The Gothic Knights improve to 8-6 overall and 4-4 in the NJAC with their 17th straight victory over Rutgers-Camden. They lead the all-time series, 55-4.
The Scarlet Raptors fall to 3-12 overall and 1-7 in the NJAC.

The loss spoiled a stellar late-game comeback by the Scarlet Raptors, who rallied from a 33-24 deficit in the final 8:13 of the second half to tie the game, 35-35, on a jumper by sophomore guard Steven Schneider (Berlin, NJ/Eastern Regional) with four seconds left in regulation.

After NJCU took a 36-35 lead in overtime on a free throw by sophomore guard Khalid Muhammad (Orange, NJ/Orange), Rutgers-Camden surged on top, 37-36, on a jumper by Junior guard/forward Teon Russell (Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson).

NJCU bounced right back to take a 38-37 lead on a layup by senior forward Walik Albright (Jersey City, NJ/Create Charter) with 3:21 left in overtime, but a free throw by Russell tied the game with 2:02 remaining.

Marley gave the Gothic Knights their winning margin by hitting his first foul shot with 1:31 remaining, but the Raptors grabbed the rebound of his second shot before turning the ball over. Down the stretch, Schneider blocked a Gothic Knight shot and Russell rebounded, but the Raptors missed a shot with six seconds remaining before Albright grabbed the rebound for NJCU.

The Gothic Knights turned the ball over in the last few seconds, giving the Raptors a chance to win at the buzzer, but the shot missed and NJCU's freshman forward Chinwe Wosu (Jersey City, NJ/University Academy Charter) grabbed the rebound as time expired.

Albright paced the Gothic Knights with 15 points, tying for game-high honors with the Raptors' Russell. Albright also led his team with seven rebounds. Mohammad added seven points and four rebounds for NJCU.

Russell collected his seventh double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Junior guard/forward Alex Smart (Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek) added 10 points for the Scarlet Raptors, while Schneider canned five.

Senior forward Shaliek Johnson (Camden/Pennsauken Tech) notched a game-high four steals for Rutgers-Camden.
The Scarlet Raptors shot 17-for-44 from the floor (38.6 percent), while the Gothic Knights shot 15-for-49 (30.6). NJCU's shooting included a 1-for-12 performance (8.3) from three-point range.

NJCU held a 38-28 advantage off the boards, while the two teams combined for 45 turnovers, 24 of them by Rutgers-Camden.

Both teams return to NJAC action Saturday with 3 p.m. games. Rutgers-Camden hosts William Paterson University and New Jersey City travels to The College of New Jersey.
