Singleton, Gonzalez spark MSU over Rutgers-Camden

Box Score MONTCLAIR, N.J. – A pair of Montclair State University guards, senior Daniel Singleton (Neptune, NJ/Neptune) and sophomore Angel Gonzalez (Ocala, FL/Meadowbrook Academy), collected 26 and 23 points, respectively, to lead the Red Hawks over Rutgers University-Camden, 87-58, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference men's basketball game here Saturday afternoon.

Montclair State, which has won three straight games, improves to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in the NJAC.

Rutgers-Camden falls to 2-8 overall and 1-3 in the NJAC.

Singleton scored 17 of his points in the opening half, while Gonzalez notched 16 in a big second half for the Red Hawks. Gonzalez shot 5-for-10 in the game from three-point range and 6-for-12 overall from the floor, while Singleton shot 11-for-17 from the floor.

The first half was a game of runs before the Red Hawks settled for a 31-30 lead at the break. Montclair State jumped to a quick 5-2 lead before Rutgers-Camden went on a 15-point run to build a 17-5 advantage. The run was sparked by back-to-back three-pointers from sophomore guard/forward Steven Schneider (Berlin, NJ/Eastern Regional) and a defense that held the Red Hawks scoreless for nearly eight minutes.

Montclair State, however, slowly inched back into the game and, trailing 26-16, went on a 15-4 run to end the half. The Red Hawks took the lead, 29-28, on a three-pointer by Gonzalez with 1:17 remaining in the half. Both Gonzalez and Singleton scored six points in the run.

Freshman guard Marcus Taylor (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) had 11 first-half points for Rutgers-Camden.

Montclair State scored seven of the first nine points to open the second half and held a 40-37 lead when it went on a 19-2 run to open up a 59-39 lead. The Red Hawks' biggest lead was 31 points at 79-48.

In addition to Singleton and Gonzalez, Montclair State received 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds from senior forward Ordel Goldson (Hackettstown, NJ/Warren Hills).

MSU shot 47.2 percent from the floor (34-for-72) in the game, including 52.4 (22-for-42) in the second half. Rutgers-Camden shot 37.5 percent (21-for-56) from the floor and was out-rebounded, 48-33. The Scarlet Raptors also had 21 turnovers to the Red Hawks' 11.

Junior guard/forward Alex Smart (Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek) finished with a team-high 18 points for the Scarlet Raptors, while tying junior guard Jason Richardson (Cedarbrook, NJ/Winslow Township) for the club high of eight rebounds. Richardson added a game-high two blocked shots.

Taylor finished with 14 points and a game-high seven assists, while Schneider scored nine points.

Freshman guard Tom Heim (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional) collected a game-high three steals.

Rutgers-Camden returns to action Monday when it hosts Rutgers-Newark in a 3 p.m. NJAC game.
