Mallory Costello (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township) notched two goals, including a back-breaking tally only 22 seconds into the second half, to lead the host Castleton State women's soccer team over Rutgers University-Camden, 3-1, in the season opener for both teams at the Rutland Herald Invitational here Saturday.
The Scarlet Raptors fell into an early 2-0 hole as the Spartan's freshman midfielder
Sarah Carlson (Bow, NH/Bow) notched an unassisted goal at 14:21 on a 25-yard shot into the bottom left corner. Costello scored at 24:56, assisted by sophomore forward
Dominique Valancius (Massena, NY/Massena). Rutgers-Camden collected its first goal of the season and cut the gap to 2-1 on a tally by sophomore
Catherine Fiore (Oaklyn, NJ/Paul VI) at 33:07. Fiore, who led the team in scoring as a freshman with five goals and 12 points, scored off a 25-yard strike.
The Spartans held a 7-4 edge in shots in the opening half, forcing Raptor freshman goalie
Katie Gurba (Westampton, NJ/Holy Cross) to make three saves in the first 45 minutes. Castleton State sophomore
Jessica Binkowski (Goshen, CT/Wamogo) had one first-half save.
It didn't take Castleton State long to get an insurance goal in the second half. Only 22 seconds in, Costello converted a feed from senior defender
Blaire Hooper (Waitsfield, VT/Green Mountain) for her second tally of the day. She hit a 25-yard shot into the top right of the goal.
The Spartans held a 16-8 advantage in shots and both teams had two corner kicks.
Gurba had three saves for the Raptors and Binkowski made five saves for the Spartans.
Both teams return to action Sunday at the Rutland Herald Invitational. The Raptors play a consolation game at 12 p.m. against Oswego State, a 1-0 loser of Saturday's nightcap against Westfield State. The Spartans play Westfield State in the championship game at 2 p.m.
