Box Score CAMDEN, N.J. (Oct. 14, 2015) – The College of New Jersey women's soccer team brought all of its lofty credentials to Rutgers-Camden Community Park here Wednesday night, and the Lions showed why they are among the top teams in the nation.
Senior midfielder
Taylor Lusardi (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) notched two goals and one assist, while sophomore forward
Elizabeth Thoresen (Colts Neck, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) had one goal and one assist to lead the Lions over Rutgers University-Camden, 5-0, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game.
TCNJ, ranked No. 9 in the NSCAA Division III Top 25 poll and No. 13 in the
D3soccer.com rankings, improves to 10-0-3 overall and 5-0-1 in the NJAC with its fourth consecutive win since a scoreless tie with Stockton University. TCNJ, which has won four of the last six NJAC titles, is aiming to capture its 17th conference championship in the last 22 years.
Rutgers-Camden falls to 3-7-1 overall and 0-4-1 in the NJAC, losing to TCNJ for the 12th consecutive time. The Lions lead the all-time series, 15-1, with the lone Raptor win coming in 2003 by a 1-0 score.
The Lions held a 19-2 advantage in shots and a 7-1 margin in corner kicks as they were on the attack most of the game. They scored only 1:55 into the contest when Thoresen ran onto Lusardi's chip over the defense and chipped a shot over the charge of Raptor junior goalie
Angela Martorano (Somerdale, NJ/Triton Regional). It was her 11th goal of the season.
At 10:29, Thoresen returned the favor, feeding Lusardi for a shot from the top of the box, which produced her sixth goal of the season. The Lions added another goal less than two minutes later, with junior back
Marissa Scognamiglio (Orangeburg, NY/Pearl River) scoring off an assist from senior midfielder
Christina Roach (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) at 12:09.
TCNJ finished out the scoring with a pair of second-half goals. Lusardi notched her second goal of the game at 47:07, finishing at the far right post off a long restart by junior back
Brianna Petro (Martinsville, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan). The final tally, at 84:18, came off a fine individual effort by sophomore forward
Hannah Richmond (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township), who spun around at the top of the box and hit a high shot over Martorano and barely under the crossbar.
Martorano made eight saves on a busy night, while TCNJ sophomore goalie
Briyanna Femia (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) needed to make only one save to notch the Lions' fifth straight shutout. TCNJ has now outscored its opponents, 47-1, in their 13 games.
Both teams return to action Saturday with NJAC games. The Lions host Ramapo College at 1 p.m., while the Scarlet Raptors visit Montclair State University for a 6 p.m. contest.
