Box Score GALLOWAY, N.J. (Oct. 29, 2015) – After a run of great soccer while building a three-game winning streak, the Rutgers University-Camden women's soccer team needed one more victory here Thursday night to qualify for the New Jersey Athletic Conference playoffs.
Unfortunately for the Scarlet Raptors, they only managed a 0-0 tie in double overtime against Stockton University as they closed their 2015 season two points shy of a NJAC tournament berth.
Rutgers-Camden finished its season with a 6-8-2 record and a 2-5-2 mark in the NJAC, closing the year with a 3-0-1 run. A win would have given the Raptors their first NJAC playoff berth since 2007.
Stockton, which will be the tournament's fifth seed, is 11-2-7 overall and 2-1-6 in the NJAC. The Ospreys will open their NJAC playoffs with a first-round game at Kean University, Saturday at 1 p.m.
Stockton leads the all-time series, 14-1-3, and had won the last eight games before Thursday night. The last time before Thursday that the Raptors got a point against the Ospreys came on Oct. 10, 2007 in a 1-1 tie. The lone Rutgers-Camden win in the series came in 2003.
The Ospreys held a 14-5 advantage in shots against the Scarlet Raptors, who didn't get their first shot until the second half. Stockton also had an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Raptor sophomore keeper
Katie Gurba (Westampton, NJ/Holy Cross) made five saves to earn her fourth shutout of the season.
Freshman goalie
Nicole Pallante (Brick, NJ/Brick Township) made three saves for Stockton. Two of them came off the foot of Raptor junior
Catherine Fiore (Collingswood, NJ/Paul VI), who finished as the team's scoring leader for the third straight season with six goals and three assists for 15 points.
The contest also served as a Post-Concussion Syndrome Awareness Game, as both NJAC teams donned special "Minds Matter" t-shirts, the event featured concussion testing and all proceeds went to benefit the Jefferson Comprehensive Concussion Center in Philadelphia. It was the second important medical charity that the Scarlet Raptors have supported this season. Members of the team bought Breast Cancer Awareness shirts with their own funds, and have been wearing them during warmups, to support that initiative.
