Box Score 2 CAMDEN, N.J. – Rutgers University-Camden freshman second baseman
Taylor Nichols (Barrington, NJ/Haddon Heights) went 5-for-5 with three runs and one RBI against her former college and junior pitcher
Brittany Scott (Buena, NJ/Buena Regional) tossed a pair of complete games as the Scarlet Raptors defeated Stockton University, 6-3 and 1-0, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader here Wednesday.
Rutgers-Camden improves to 11-3-1 overall and 4-0 in the NJAC, while running its unbeaten streak to 10 games (9-0-1).
Stockton falls to 10-5 overall and 0-4 in the conference.
Stockton plays a 6 p.m. non-conference doubleheader at Arcadia University Thursday. Rutgers-Camden has another home doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. when it hosts NJAC opponent Kean University.
Rutgers-Camden 6, Stockton 3
Nichols, who attended Stockton for a year and played soccer for the Ospreys in 2013, but not softball, went 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI, while Scott hurled a five-hitter and drilled a two-run home run to help her own cause.
Rutgers-Camden took the lead for good with a three-run third inning, aided by table-setting singles from senior left fielder
Devon Welsh (Maple Shade, NJ/Audubon) and sophomore right fielder
Jalene Garcia (Vineland, NJ/Vineland). Nichols singled home Welsh, Garcia scored on a wild pitch prior to Scott drawing a walk, and junior center fielder
Lindsay Day (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) capped the frame with an RBI single.
Stockton, which scored all of its runs on home runs, got two back in the fourth inning on a two-run shot from sophomore right fielder
Holly Arentowicz (Roxbury, NJ/Roxbury), but Rutgers-Camden put the game away with another three-spot in the fifth. Scott hit a two-run homer in the frame and freshman catcher
Samantha Sandridge (Friendswood, TX/Friendswood) singled home the final run.
Stockton's final run came in the sixth on a solo home run by junior first baseman
Dominique Dorris (Mantua, NJ/Clearview Regional). Scott allowed five hits, three earned runs and three walks, while striking out six. In addition to Nichols' big game, Sandridge went 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Rutgers-Camden 1, Stockton 0
Scott hurled her third shutout of the season, raising her record to 9-2, as she allowed four hits and two walks, while fanning five. She had to be stingy on the mound, as Stockton junior Samantha Shockey (Deptford, NJ/Deptford) allowed only one unearned run. Shockey, who played one season at Rutgers-Camden in 2013, allowed four hits and one walk, while striking out three, as her record fell to 4-2.
The lone run of the game came in the third, sparked by Nichols' two-out triple. Scott followed with a slow roller toward second base and the hurried throw would have beaten her, but it popped out of the first baseman's glove as Nichols scored.
Nichols went 2-for-2 and scored the only run. She extended her team-high hitting streak to 10 games in the doubleheader. Garcia, who had one hit in each game, extended her hitting streak to eight.
