Box Score GALLOWAY, N.J. – Junior pitcher
John Griffin (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional) earned his first collegiate victory with 5.2 innings of two-hit shutout relief and junior designated hitter
Joe Sigismondi (Blackwood, NJ/Highland Regional) went 3-for-4 with one run scored as the Rutgers University-Camden baseball team defeated Stockton University, 3-1, here Monday in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game.
The Scarlet Raptors, who have won 12 of their last 13 games, improve to 14-9 overall and a league-leading 9-1 in the NJAC. The Ospreys fall to 11-11 overall and 3-7 in the NJAC with their fifth straight loss.
Stockton scored the first run of the game following a leadoff first-inning double by senior left fielder
Keith Tappert (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East). He advanced to third on a one-out single by senior third baseman
Brett Solomen (Harrison Township, NJ/Clearview) and scored on a sacrifice fly to right by senior right fielder
George Eisenhart (Harrison Township, NJ/Clearview). The Scarlet Raptors countered with single runs in the second and fourth inning, sparked by senior center fielder
Bobby Romano (Vineland, NJ/Vineland), who continued his red-hot play. Romano, who hit .500 with a 1.000 slugging percentage in five games last week, walked in the second inning, stole second and advanced to third on a fly to right by senior first baseman
Connor Hall (Delran, NJ/Delran). He scored on a sacrifice fly to left by junior third baseman
Brett Tenuto (Audubon, NJ/Gloucester Catholic). In the fourth, Romano singled, stole second, advanced to third on a single by Hall and scored on a double play grounder by Tenuto.
The Scarlet Raptors added another run in the fifth after a two-out double by junior designated hitter
Joe Sigismondi (Blackwood, NJ/Highland Regional). Sophomore shortstop
Tim Holder (Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) followed with a walk before sophomore left fielder
Joe Brooks (Blackwood, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) hit a run-scoring single up the middle.
Griffin, meanwhile, held the Ospreys in check after entering the game in the fourth inning for junior starter
Chris Scarlett (Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit). He entered with the bases loaded and only one out and induced a double play grounder from Tappert to work out of the jam. He allowed only two singles – one a bunt single – the rest of the way and set down the side in order in each of the last three innings. It was the first career win for Griffin (1-2), who pitched with the Raptors as a freshman in 2013 before missing last season. He didn't walk a batter and struck out three.
Scarlett worked the first 3.1 innings, allowing three hits, five walks and one earned run, while striking out two.
In addition to Sigismondi's three hits, sophomore catcher
Jon Theckston (Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) and sophomore right fielder
Zach Ellin (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) both went 2-for-4. Theckston extended his hitting streak to eight games, the longest current string on the team.
Stockton junior starter
Mike Bergin (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) worked 6.1 innings, allowing nine hits, two walks and three earned runs. Bergin (1-2) struck out five.
Rutgers-Camden hosts Baruch College in a 4 p.m. non-conference game Tuesday.
