Box Score 2 JERSEY CITY, N.J. (April 25, 2015) – The Rutgers University-Camden softball team closed out the regular season with a hitting clinic, exploding for 20 hits, including eight extra-base hits, and 21 runs as it swept New Jersey City University, 10-0 in five innings and 11-3, here Saturday.
The Raptors end the regular season with a four-game winning streak, hiking their record to 21-11-1 overall and 11-7 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. They will be the sixth seed when they open the
NJAC playoffs Tuesday at top-seeded Rowan University.
The Gothic Knights closed their season at 2-30, including 0-18 in the NJAC.
Junior center fielder
Lindsay Day (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) went 4-for-5 with four runs, two doubles, one home run and three RBIs in the doubleheader, while junior third baseman
Katie Larson (Delran, NJ/Delran) was 4-for-7 with two runs and three RBIs.
Senior shortstop
Krystine Rice (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) went a combined 3-for-7 with two runs and one RBI, while junior pitcher
Brittany Scott (Buena, NJ/Buena Regional) hurled 7.2 shutout innings, collected one win and 11 strikeouts and added a double, a home run and three RBIs.
Rutgers-Camden 10, NJCU 0 (5 innings)
Scott struck out five while hurling a four-hit shutout in the opener, which was called after five innings by the eight-run rule. She raised her record to 16-10.
The Raptors scored all the runs she needed in the first inning, aided by five hits and two errors. Day had a RBI double in the frame, while Larson and freshman first baseman
Lauren Simmons (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) collected RBI singles.
Day hit a two-run homer in the third inning and the Raptors scored three times in the fourth, aided by RBI singles from Larson and Rice.
For the game, Day went 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs, while Rice was 3-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Larson went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs.
Rutgers-Camden 11, NJCU 3
After Rutgers-Camden grabbed a 4-0 lead through the top of the fifth inning, the Gothic Knights cut the gap to 4-3 in the bottom of the frame on a three-run home run by junior first baseman
Faith Ely (Vienna, NJ/Hackettstown). Rutgers-Camden broke open the game with a four-run sixth, sparked by a leadoff walk to Simmons. Freshman
Mackenzie Mason (Carneys Point, NJ/Penns Grove) was inserted as a pinch-runner and she scored on a double by senior left fielder
Devon Welsh (Maple Shade, NJ/Audubon). Welsh scored on an error and both Scott and Larson added sacrifice flies later in the frame.
Sophomore right fielder
Jalene Garcia (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) hit a two-run triple in the Raptors' three-run seventh. She scored on a single by freshman second baseman
Taylor Nichols (Barrington, NJ/Haddon Heights). For the game, Welsh went 2-for-4 with two doubles, a run and three RBIs. Scott went 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs, while Larson added two hits. Garcia had two runs and two RBIs.
Freshman pitcher
Samantha Sandridge (Friendswood, TX/Friendswood) worked 4.1 innings, allowing five hits, two walks and three earned runs, to get the win. She raised her record to 5-1.
Scott earned her third save with 2.2 perfect innings. She struck out six, including the final four NJCU batters.
