CAMDEN, N.J. (Oct. 12, 2016) – With each passing game against nationally-ranked opponents, the Rutgers University-Camden women's soccer team closes the gap.

For the sixth time this season, the Scarlet Raptors battled a ranked team as they hosted Rowan University here Wednesday night in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game. And although the Profs had the slight edge in play overall, the Scarlet Raptors pushed another national powerhouse to the limits before falling to their conference opponent, 1-0.

Junior forward Shannon Reardigan (Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) headed in the lone goal of the game at 60:51 off a feed from senior forward Maxine New (Clayton, NJ/Clayton). Reardigan tucked her eighth goal of the season inside the near left post.

The Profs, ranked No. 14 in the NSCAA Division III poll and No. 9 in the D3soccer.com Top 25, improve their record to 13-0-1 overall and 5-0-1 in the NJAC. It was their fourth straight victory and 13th shutout in 14 games.

Rutgers-Camden falls to 4-7-2 overall and 2-4 in the NJAC. Six of the Raptors' seven losses have come against teams ranked in the national Top 25, including four by one goal and two of those in overtime.

Rowan owns a 16-0-2 record in its all-time series against Rutgers-Camden, including eight straight wins and seven straight shutouts.

After a quick start in which the Profs launched four shots in the opening 6:41, the half settled down and both teams had stretches of controlling the play. Rowan finished with an 8-2 advantage in shots in the opening half and a 14-6 advantage in the game. The Profs also had all five of the game's corner kicks, all coming in the second half.

Early in the second half, the Raptors had a fine scoring opportunity when senior forward Catherine Fiore (Collingswood, NJ/Paul VI) broke into the box from the right side, but her shot toward the far post went wide left. That was the best opportunity until Reardigan finished her shot for the game's lone goal.

Raptor junior keeper Katie Gurba (Westampton, NJ/Holy Cross) made six saves. Rutgers-Camden also received an outstanding defensive job in back from junior Aubrey Andrews (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights), sophomore Brielle Stoner (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and freshmen Megan Morrison (Carneys Point, NJ/Pennsville), Haylee Loveland (Riverside, NJ/Riverside) and Michelle Popovski (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) to shut down a dangerous offense that now has scored 48 goals in its 14 games.

Rowan sophomore goalie Shelby Money (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) made two saves, both on shots from Fiore, to earn the shutout.

Both teams return to NJAC action Saturday. Rowan hosts Rutgers-Newark at 1 p.m. Rutgers-Camden plays a 7:30 p.m. contest at Kean University.
