WAYNE, N.J. (Oct. 22, 2016) – With its back to the wall for a potential New Jersey Athletic Conference playoff berth, the Rutgers University-Camden women's soccer team made a strong bid for a vital victory here Saturday afternoon. Yet after holding a one-goal lead for 10 minutes in the second half, the Scarlet Raptors were tied and eventually lost, 2-1, on a penalty kick early in overtime by William Paterson University freshman midfielder
Lorraine Moffitt (Paramus, NJ/Paramus).
The loss drops the Scarlet Raptors to 4-9-2 overall and 2-6 in the NJAC, eliminating them from a possible berth in the upcoming six-team conference playoffs. The Scarlet Raptors will close their season Wednesday night with a 7 p.m. home game against NJAC rival Stockton University.
William Paterson, meanwhile, raises its record to 12-4-1 overall and 4-4 in the NJAC with its third straight victory. The Pioneers have gone 6-0-3 against Rutgers-Camden since the last Scarlet Raptor win in 2007, and Paterson holds a 9-4-4 lead in the all-time series.
After a scoreless first half, the Scarlet Raptors finally broke the goal drought at 51:40 when senior forward
Catherine Fiore (Collingswood, NJ/Paul VI) dribbled past sophomore keeper
Torii Zamorski (Linden, NJ/Union Catholic) and finished off her fifth goal of the season with a shot inside the box. She was assisted by freshman midfielder
Kacie Walton (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington).
The goal was the 22nd of Fiore's stellar career, moving her into seventh place on the program's career list, breaking a tie with Rachel Greenwald (2002-04). The two points lifted her career total to 55, tying for seventh on the all-time list with Samantha Sharp (2008-11).
William Paterson tied the game at 61:55 when freshman forward
Marisa Adelman (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville) recovered a turnover and drilled a shot inside the left post from the right wing. It was her 17th goal of the season, the top total in the NJAC.
Early in the first overtime, an attempted slide tackle in the box resulted in a foul and gave Kean a penalty kick opportunity. Moffitt buried the PK in the upper left corner for her third goal of the season and her second game winner.
Rutgers-Camden finished with a 12-10 advantage in shots, while Paterson held a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.
Zamorski collected four saves playing the final 72:44 after starting goalie
Angela Sandelli (Landing, NJ/Roxbury) was red-carded at 19:37, leaving the Pioneers a player down the rest of the game.
Rutgers-Camden junior goalie
Katie Gurba (Westampton, NJ/Holy Cross) had five saves, while running her total of career minutes to 3,399:18. On Wednesday she should become only the second goalie in program history to pass the 3,400-minute mark and if that game goes into overtime, she could set a new career record, passing Kristen Stewart, who logged 3498 minutes from 1998-2001.
