CAMDEN, N.J. (March 12, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Camden men's tennis team evened its season record at 1-1 here Saturday afternoon as it posted a 7-2 non-conference victory over Lehman College in its home opener.
The Scarlet Raptors, who had been blanked 9-0 in their season opener at Muhlenberg College Feb. 21, lost the first two singles matches, but won the last four singles and swept the doubles competition to give first-year Head Coach
Casey McCullough her first victory with the men's program. McCullough also coached the Rutgers-Camden women in the fall.
Lehman, which was opening the spring portion of its season, fell to 0-2 on the year. The Lightning lost their one match in the fall part of the schedule.
Rutgers-Camden senior
Alexander Delvalle (Eastampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional) and junior
Jason Lin (Shirley, NY/William Floyd) notched an 8-4 victory at first doubles. Juniors
Anthony Gendin (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional) and
Ryan Christopher (Washington Township, NJ/Washington Township) won at second doubles, 8-2, and the third doubles team of seniors
Drew Delengowski (West Deptford, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) and
Onkar Singh (Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek) won by default.
Delengowski also won at third singles (6-2, 6-4), while Christopher and Lin swept 6-0, 6-0 at fourth and fifth singles, respectively. At sixth singles, Singh won by default.
Lehman's two victories came at first singles, Senior
Gene Nakagaki won a marathon over Gendin, 5-7, 6-4, 10-6, at first singles and Freshman
Jason Strudwick topped Delvalle, 6-3, 6-1, at second singles.
The Scarlet Raptors return to action Sunday with a 12 p.m. match at Stevenson University. Their next home match will be March 19, at 12 p.m. against John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
