Box Score

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 18, 2016) – With two outs and nobody on base in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Rutgers University-Camden softball team was one out away from ending its semester break trip to the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic with a 3-0 victory.

That last out never came and the University of Wisconsin-Stout rallied for a stunning 4-3 victory here Friday.

The Scarlet Raptors ended their spring trip with a 6-2 record, snapping a six-game winning streak in a trip that was bookended by losses in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The result left both Rutgers-Camden and Wisconsin-Stout with 7-5 overall records.

Trailing, 3-0, the Blue Devils started their winning rally with a pinch-hit single through the left side by senior Sara Griesbach (Stratford, WI/Stratford). Senior second baseman Karley Wiensch (Chippewa Falls, WI/McDonell) followed with an infield single to shortstop and senior pitcher Tori Workman (Prior Lake, MN/Prior Lake) drew a walk to load the bases. Sophomore center fielder Rachel Thomas (Hastings, MN/Hastings) ripped a two-run single up the middle and advanced into scoring position on a throw to the plate. Sophomore first baseman Beth Wood (Mineral Point, WI/Mineral Point) followed with an opposite-field bloop single over shortstop that plated Workman with the tying run and Thomas with the winning run.

The sudden turn of events made a winning pitcher out of Workman (2-3), who allowed seven hits, two walks and three earned runs in her complete-game effort. She struck out two.

Rutgers-Camden senior Brittany Scott (Buena, NJ/Buena Regional) took the tough loss in her 6.2-inning complete game as her record fell to 5-3. She allowed eight hits, four earned runs and one walk, while fanning eight.

The Scarlet Raptors took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when senior center fielder Lindsay Day (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) drew a two-out walk, stole second and scored on a single to right-center by senior shortstop Katie Larson (Delran, NJ/Delran).

Rutgers-Camden added two runs in the sixth after sophomore second baseman Taylor Nichols (Barrington, NJ/Haddon Heights) singled, stole second and scored on a double by Scott. Junior first baseman Abby Merryman (Washington Township, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) plated Scott with a two-out single.

Larson and Nichols had two hits apiece for the Scarlet Raptors.

Rutgers-Camden returns to action on Thursday when it plays a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Penn State-Abington. The Scarlet Raptors' home opener will come Tuesday, March 29, with a 3 p.m. doubleheader against Centenary College.
