Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

UNION, N.J. (April 10, 2016) – Runs proved hard to come by for the Rutgers University-Camden softball team here Sunday, but the Scarlet Raptors managed just enough offense to earn a split in their New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader against Kean University.

Rutgers-Camden outlasted the Cougars, 1-0, in a 10-inning first game before losing the nightcap, 7-0.

The split leaves the Raptors with a 12-10 record overall and a 3-3 mark in the NJAC. Kean stands at 12-10 and 5-1.

Rutgers-Camden will host The College of New Jersey in a 3 p.m. NJAC doubleheader on Tuesday.

Rutgers-Camden 1, Kean 0 (10 innings)

The opening game was a pitchers' duel between Scarlet Raptor junior Brittany Scott (Buena, NJ/Buena Regional) and Cougar junior Kiele Eichlin (Milford, NJ/Delaware Valley Regional), who both worked 10 innings in the game decided by an unearned run due to the international tie-breaker rule, where the final batter of the previous inning is placed at second base to start every inning beyond the seventh.

The game's lone run came in the top of the 10th after Scott started the inning at second base. She advanced on a grounder to the right side by senior third baseman Katie Larson (Delran, NJ/Delran) and was squeezed home by senior centerfielder Lindsay Day (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest).

The Cougars had runners at first and second with one out in the bottom of the frame, but Scott completed her shutout with a strikeout and a fly to left. It was her fifth shutout of the season. She allowed five hits and six walks – two of them intentional – while striking out five to raise her record to 9-6. Her biggest jam came in the first inning when Kean loaded the bases on two hits and an intentional walk with one out before Scott retired the Cougars on a strikeout and a fly out.

Eichlin (5-7) allowed only two hits – singles by Larson and sophomore second baseman Taylor Nichols (Barrington, NJ/Haddon Heights) – and one walk in her 10 innings. She struck out eight.

Kean 7, Rutgers-Camden 0

Kean turned the tables in the nightcap as junior pitcher Shannon McMahon (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) tossed a seven-hit shutout. She walked one and struck out four while recording her fifth straight complete game without allowing an earned run, raising her record to 7-3.

After being shut out for the first 11 innings of the doubleheader, the Cougars scored all the runs McMahon needed in the second inning of the nightcap, aided by four hits and an error. The eventual game-winning run was doubled home by junior third baseman Amanda Berezny (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills). The Cougars added another three-run inning in the third, highlighted by a two-run double from senior first baseman Tiffany Varriello (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial).

Junior Abby Merryman (Washington Township, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) took the loss for Rutgers-Camden, allowing 11 hits and seven runs – only three earned – in her six-inning complete game. Merryman (3-4) walked two and struck out two.

Varriello and freshman leftfielder Olivia Zengel (Stockton, NJ/Hunterdon Central) had three hits apiece for Kean.

Scott went 3-for-3 for the Scarlet Raptors.
